Review: L’Oreal Infallible #425 Always Apricot

LOreal-Infallible-#425-Always-Apricot

LOreal-Infallible-#425-Always-Apricot

Even though I am addicted to lipstick, I’m pretty lazy when it comes to the up-keep during the day. It’s a shame really, I spend all this time in the morning perfecting my look and then I let myself go as the day wears on. For this reason I absolutely love the idea of long wearing lipsticks, but often the execution of these formulas leaves a lot to be desired. I tried the old Infallible range from L’Oreal, the one with the separate colour and balm sticks, and thought they were hideously cakey, so I was keen to try their new formulation

What I love: There are a great selection of shades on offer in this range but I was immediately drawn to Always Apricot, a beautiful warm orange red with a golden fleck throughout. It’s a timeless shade which looks great with minimal makeup on the rest of the face and really warms up my skin tone. The stay put power means that you don’t need a lip liner to make this one work, it will easily last you through a morning coffee or two, but not through lunch, so be prepared for an afternoon reapplication. The pigmentation is fantastic, it’s not dry or cakey and for those who are sensitive to fragrance and taste, this lipstick has neither.

What I don’t love: Even though I’m happy with both the staying power and pigmentation, the initial application of this lipstick is what lets it down for me. It has that kind of sticky feeling  you get when you pull a piece of blu-tack between your fingers which lasts at least for the first hour. Unfortunately this means that I spend the morning pursing my lips together to get rid of the tackiness and become the subject of a few strange looks at work. Also, I’m not a fan of the packaging, but I think this may just be a personal thing as I know many others who like it. Apart from being hard to open, the see through casing somehow makes me feel like I’m showing my under-garments and the red top seems pointless.

For the price, this is a great value, long wearing lipstick. If it wasn’t for the sticky feeling, this one would be a winner.

Review: Bourjois Sweet Kiss #43 Rose Pomponne

Bourjois-Sweet-Kiss-#43-Rose-Pomponne

Bourjois-Sweet-Kiss-#43-Rose-Pomponne

After hearing rave reviews about Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation I really wanted to try it, but if there’s one thing I don’t need, it’s more foundation.

I told myself that the only way I was allowed to buy it was if it was on sale, and what do ya know – it was 50% off at my local Priceline (Australian drug store) a  couple of weeks ago.

So I go in on a mission to only buy lipstick, I mean foundation, I mean ….. whatever, I bought both.

What I love:
This lipstick is really lovely and I’ve gotten lots of compliments when I wear it. The colour is a very wearable, rose pink with cool undertones and the finish is creamy with a subtle shine. This lipstick is definitely build-able, with one swipe giving a very light sheer pink, and two or three layers giving that beautiful rose colour with amazing depth.  I also really like this  lipstick for it’s moisturising formula, lightweight feel on my lips and pleasant musk scent. The packaging on this lipstick is interesting in that the cap covers the entire tube and can be removed by pushing down the little silver slider on the side, whereby the lipstick simply pops out the bottom. It’s also a unique vibrant purple that stands out amongst my other lipsticks, and has a coloured end matching the shade inside.

What I don’t love:
In terms of staying power it’s acceptable, but not note-worthy, and as much as I commend their efforts to be unique on the packaging front, they just haven’t quite pulled it off in my opinion. I find the push mechanism to get the lipstick out to be a little clunky (or maybe that’s just me being uncoordinated!) and once you have the lipstick out of the casing, it actually looks a bit like a tester which is disappointing.

I’ve found myself wearing  this lipstick quite often and on it’s own it’s very pretty, but I’ve also found it to be a great base, even mixing it with red lipsticks to make a pretty cherry colour. I do like this lipstick but I probably wouldn’t buy it at full price (around $20 in Australia)

Review: Revlon Color Burst #35 Blush

Revlon Color Burst-#35 Blush

Revlon ColorBurst-#35 Blush

I bought this lipstick a couple of weeks ago after reading some positive reviews on Make Up Alley and it has become my new go to lipstick! I’m actually wearing it more often than my Chanel Rouge Coco #5!

So I love this lipstick because:

  • It has a beautiful creamy texture that feels so light on the lips, unlike the Rouge Coco, which is a little drying, I don’t notice my lips are dry at all with the Revlon.
  • The colour is one of those ‘My Lips But Better’ shades. I’d describe it as a neutral pinky colour, which would suit most medium to light skin tones.
  • It’s so easy to wear, I can apply it in a hurry and even without a mirror.
  • It’s has a perfect amount of shine with just a tiny hint of sparkle. Enough to make your lips look full and luscious.
  • The packaging is very chic – a matte black case with a diamond detailing on the front and back, very classy
  • It has almost no scent at all!

I suppose the only down side to this lipstick is that it isn’t long wearing, and requires frequent re-application throughout the day, but given how quick and easy it is to slap on it doesn’t bother me at all!

Review: Maybelline Color Sensational #253 Cinnamon Stick

Maybelline ColorSensational-#253 Cinnamon Stick

Maybelline ColorSensational-#253 Cinnamon Stick

I really like the Color Sensational range from Maybelline, I have a few of them now and I just find that they are a great inexpensive lipstick that go on smoothly, are not too drying and wear incredibly well. I also really like the packaging as they have a different lid color for each color family i.e. brown for neutrals, red for red, pink for pinks etc, which makes it really easy to locate the one you’re after quickly.

This particular shade is probably my favourite, it’s on the Maybelline website as a Neutral colour but it goes on as a sort of earthy red. This lipstick has little flecks of coppery sparkle through it so it gives a shiny, but not glossy, finish and the color payoff is great. It’s a rich red that is muted enough to be wearable everyday and, if applied with a brush, will seriously last hours. I had it on today and it lasted through breakfast, morning snack, a couple of cups of coffee all the way up until lunch time and, although it had lost its sparkle, was still in pretty good shape. It didn’t make it through lunch but I’m still fairly impressed.

So the downside? It smells like cinnamon-vanilla play dough! If you’re a fan of play dough, you’ll love this lipstick, and even if you’re not it’s not a strong smell so it’s worth putting up with it.
