Review: L’Oreal Infallible #425 Always Apricot

LOreal-Infallible-#425-Always-Apricot

LOreal-Infallible-#425-Always-Apricot

Even though I am addicted to lipstick, I’m pretty lazy when it comes to the up-keep during the day. It’s a shame really, I spend all this time in the morning perfecting my look and then I let myself go as the day wears on. For this reason I absolutely love the idea of long wearing lipsticks, but often the execution of these formulas leaves a lot to be desired. I tried the old Infallible range from L’Oreal, the one with the separate colour and balm sticks, and thought they were hideously cakey, so I was keen to try their new formulation

What I love: There are a great selection of shades on offer in this range but I was immediately drawn to Always Apricot, a beautiful warm orange red with a golden fleck throughout. It’s a timeless shade which looks great with minimal makeup on the rest of the face and really warms up my skin tone. The stay put power means that you don’t need a lip liner to make this one work, it will easily last you through a morning coffee or two, but not through lunch, so be prepared for an afternoon reapplication. The pigmentation is fantastic, it’s not dry or cakey and for those who are sensitive to fragrance and taste, this lipstick has neither.

What I don’t love: Even though I’m happy with both the staying power and pigmentation, the initial application of this lipstick is what lets it down for me. It has that kind of sticky feeling  you get when you pull a piece of blu-tack between your fingers which lasts at least for the first hour. Unfortunately this means that I spend the morning pursing my lips together to get rid of the tackiness and become the subject of a few strange looks at work. Also, I’m not a fan of the packaging, but I think this may just be a personal thing as I know many others who like it. Apart from being hard to open, the see through casing somehow makes me feel like I’m showing my under-garments and the red top seems pointless.

For the price, this is a great value, long wearing lipstick. If it wasn’t for the sticky feeling, this one would be a winner.

Review: Revlon Super Lustrous #674 Coralberry

Revlon_Super Lustrous_#674-Coralberry

Revlon_Super Lustrous_#674-Coralberry

I purchased this lipstick on a buy one, get one free offer and is one of the seasonal shades for Revlon this year. I’m not sure that the name of this shade fits terribly well, as I personally can’t see any hint of berry, but it’s definitely a nice option for those wanting to try the coral trend.

What I love: This shade is fun and leans more on the pink side of coral. As this is a Creme formula there is only a hint of gold shimmer, which could be a little daunting for those who are not used to creme/matte lipsticks, but it wears nicely and is very moisturizing. This is quite a bright, pigmented lipstick but is also buildable so you could just wear a light swipe for a sheerer look. The packaging is timeless and has a clear lid to help you locate it in your ever growing collection of lipsticks ( I know it can’t be just me!).

What I don’t love: There are only two things I can pick on in this lipstick and neither are deal breakers. Firstly, although I like the packaging, the lid seems to keep coming off in my purse so it’s a bit annoying. Secondly, and this might not be a ‘don’t love’ for all, but it has NO SMELL, and it’s kind of weirding me out! It could be because I just finished reading Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, and now know that having no smell clearly makes you a freaky serial killer. But like I said some of you may really like that this lipstick is scent free but just make sure you’re mindful if you start getting a penchant for sweet smelling girls 🙂

All in all this is a nice lipstick that will look really pretty on those with paler skin. I’m not sure that I’d have been as comfortable if I’d paid the full $23 that they are here in Australia, but on a two for one deal you can’t go past it.

Review: Rimmel London Lasting Finish #058 A Drop of Sherry

Rimmel_Lasting-Finish_#058-Drop-of-Sherry

Rimmel_Lasting-Finish_#058-Drop-of-Sherry

I bought this on a whim, sucked in by good Point of Sale and a low price point – I am every marketers dream. I think it was the name of this shade, ‘ A Drop of Sherry’, I thought it would be a rich, decadent colour that I would adore, and so I didn’t even test it, but I should have paid more attention to the ‘Drop’ part in the name, as it’s not as deep a colour as I was expecting.

What I love: I’d describe the colour as a bright, deep pinky/rose colour, rather than a sherry or wine colour and this formula has very good colour pay off. After two pieces of toast, an apple, two cups of coffee and a sandwich I was left with a pretty pink stain by mid afternoon, without any touch ups – impressive. The formula is soft and moisturizing and leaves my lips feeling smooth at the end of the day.

What I don’t love: The packaging is plain and boring, and you know how much I rate good packaging. Although moisturizing, this formula feels heavy, you definitely know you’re wearing it and the smell is a little strong for me. It’s kind of like a chemical smell which is trying to be masked with a floral scent, so combined with the heavy formula I feel like this lipstick too over-powering. I guess my main issue with this lipstick is the finish, it has a golden shimmer, and a creamy sheen that just feels too ‘old lady’ for me. I know that other reviews for this lipstick have been positive, but I really feel that it’s not a very modern shade.

Given that it was cheap (about $8-9 AUD) I’m not too bothered that I don’t love it, but I can’t help thinking that  it’s money I could have put towards a lipstick that I do love. In saying that, I’d still be keen to try some of the other shades in this range as I was very impressed with the colour pay-off and staying power.

Review: Maybelline Color Sensational #253 Cinnamon Stick

Maybelline ColorSensational-#253 Cinnamon Stick

Maybelline ColorSensational-#253 Cinnamon Stick

I really like the Color Sensational range from Maybelline, I have a few of them now and I just find that they are a great inexpensive lipstick that go on smoothly, are not too drying and wear incredibly well. I also really like the packaging as they have a different lid color for each color family i.e. brown for neutrals, red for red, pink for pinks etc, which makes it really easy to locate the one you’re after quickly.

This particular shade is probably my favourite, it’s on the Maybelline website as a Neutral colour but it goes on as a sort of earthy red. This lipstick has little flecks of coppery sparkle through it so it gives a shiny, but not glossy, finish and the color payoff is great. It’s a rich red that is muted enough to be wearable everyday and, if applied with a brush, will seriously last hours. I had it on today and it lasted through breakfast, morning snack, a couple of cups of coffee all the way up until lunch time and, although it had lost its sparkle, was still in pretty good shape. It didn’t make it through lunch but I’m still fairly impressed.

So the downside? It smells like cinnamon-vanilla play dough! If you’re a fan of play dough, you’ll love this lipstick, and even if you’re not it’s not a strong smell so it’s worth putting up with it.
