Review: Rimmel London Lasting Finish #058 A Drop of Sherry

I bought this on a whim, sucked in by good Point of Sale and a low price point – I am every marketers dream. I think it was the name of this shade, ‘ A Drop of Sherry’, I thought it would be a rich, decadent colour that I would adore, and so I didn’t even test it, but I should have paid more attention to the ‘Drop’ part in the name, as it’s not as deep a colour as I was expecting.

What I love: I’d describe the colour as a bright, deep pinky/rose colour, rather than a sherry or wine colour and this formula has very good colour pay off. After two pieces of toast, an apple, two cups of coffee and a sandwich I was left with a pretty pink stain by mid afternoon, without any touch ups – impressive. The formula is soft and moisturizing and leaves my lips feeling smooth at the end of the day.

What I don’t love: The packaging is plain and boring, and you know how much I rate good packaging. Although moisturizing, this formula feels heavy, you definitely know you’re wearing it and the smell is a little strong for me. It’s kind of like a chemical smell which is trying to be masked with a floral scent, so combined with the heavy formula I feel like this lipstick too over-powering. I guess my main issue with this lipstick is the finish, it has a golden shimmer, and a creamy sheen that just feels too ‘old lady’ for me. I know that other reviews for this lipstick have been positive, but I really feel that it’s not a very modern shade.

Given that it was cheap (about $8-9 AUD) I’m not too bothered that I don’t love it, but I can’t help thinking that  it’s money I could have put towards a lipstick that I do love. In saying that, I’d still be keen to try some of the other shades in this range as I was very impressed with the colour pay-off and staying power.

Review: Rimmel London Colour Show Off #140 Kiss Me

Although I am a self confessed lipstick lover, I tend to shy away from really bold colours, but with bright being the current trend, I thought I’d give it a go. So I started my hunt for a bold lipstick, preferably in a coral/pink shade, that was reasonably priced in case I never wore the damn thing again!

Enter Rimmel London Colour Show Off in shade 140 ‘Kiss Me’  at AUS$14.95

What I love: it has excellent colour pay off and I personally think it’s a very flattering, albeit bold, shade. It’s definitely a bright coral pink, so it ticked both boxes there, but you have to have the confidence to pull it off! I’m not ashamed to admit that I still haven’t gathered up the courage to wear this one to work, but I do love it for a flirty, fun weekend shade.

What I don’t love: the texture is a little heavy for my liking and the smell is very strong. It’s a rose scent, which is usually pleasant, but it can be overpowering, which is true in this case.
But what i really don’t like is the packaging – it’s a bright, shiny, flimsy pink plastic.  Hideous, tacky, urghh! Well that’s obviously my personal opinion, and I suppose you get what you pay for, but when you compare other lipsticks at the same price point I think it disappoints.

So although I love the colour, that’s probably all I love about this lipstick. If you’re looking for an inexpensive bold lipstick to see you through this trend then it’s definitely an option.
